Our mission: Hawai‘i Pacific University is an international learning community set in the rich cultural context of Hawai'i. Students from around the world join us for an American education built on a liberal arts foundation. Our innovative undergraduate and graduate programs anticipate the changing needs of the community and prepare our graduates to live, work, and learn as active members of a global society.

For 40 years, HPU’s 3^rd President, Chatt G. Wright has upheld this mission.  His work in the Peace Corps many years ago sparked an interest in a global education, and he and his colleagues set the stage early on at HPU. His desire was to make our university a global institution. Under his leadership, a small college with a handful of programs became the HPU we know today: a mid-sized university with over sixty undergraduate and graduate programs. HPU is now the largest private university in Hawai‘i, boasting 8200 students, employing more than 1000 faculty and staff, and with students and alumni from more than 100 countries.

It is hard to miss the indelible mark of President Wright, whether in the launch of a new educational initiative or in providing opportunities for minds to be nurtured, strengthened and challenged with global citizenship at the forefront. 

This June, he will pass the torch to the next generation of HPU leaders and students.
